Females of the acorn weevil, Curculio glandium, search for cracks and holes in available acorns later in the season, to avoid hard and laborious formation of a hole from the start. Sometimes, females approach other boring females, probably to add their own egg(s) and/or take over the control on the existing hole. Two tactcis of intruder females can be observed: (1) insertion own beak into the hole formatted by the resident female and (2) waiting for a proper moment to mount a female in male-like manner, probably to evoke evasive response related with abandoning of the place. The video shows the both tactics . The recordings were made in the laboratory where field collected females were introduced to an artifially wounded acorn. Both females had been deprived of acorns for 1 or 2 day before the recording session to extend their motivation to oviposit.
